Temple overview

Tripura Sundari Temple is located in ancient Udaipur, about 55 km from Agartala, thought to be one of the country’s most holy Hindu temples. Popularly known as Matabari, it ranks in a tiny hill and is served by the red-robed priests who traditionally minister to Tripura Sundari’s mother goddess. Considered one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, it comprises of a typical Bengali hut square type sanctum. It is thought that the correct foot of Sati fell here during Nataraj Dance of Lord Shiva.

Legend has it that King Dhanyamanikya, who governed Tripura in the closing years of the fifteenth century, had a revelation in his dream one night, ordering him to put Goddess Tripurasundari in the temple standing on a hilltop near Udaipur town. The temple had already been devoted to Lord Vishnu, and the king was originally confused, unable to determine how a temple devoted to Vishnu might have Shiva’s consort idol. The oracle, however, reiterated the king’s divine injunction the next night, after which the ruler chose to follow the ethereal order, despite the reality that Vishnu and Shiva typified two distinct sects of religious followers. Thus, around the year 1501, the Tripura Sundari temple was created and is now about 500 years old. This legend is described as one of the examples of how solidarity was known and fostered even in medieval times between the two sub-groups, the Vaishnava and Shaiva sects.
