Legend

PoigaiAlwar was born on a Tuesday in Thiruvekka. BhoodhatAlwar was born on a Wednesday in Avittam, and on Thursday in Sathayam, Pei Alwar was born. One day, all the Alwars in Thirukuvillorr decided to worship the Lord. They started to reach Thirukkovilloor from their respective places. It began to rain heavily. PoigaiAlwar took shelter in the house of a Brahmin where he was given a small room that was only big enough for one man to lie down. BhoodhatAlwar also came to the same place sometime later to take shelter. He could not be rejected by the Brahmin. PoigaiAlwar said the two of them could sit comfortably night long and agreed with Bhoodatalwar. So, both of them sat down and began singing the Lord’s praises. Sometime later, Pei Alwar also came to the same house for shelter. Also, he could not be rejected by the Brahmin. PoigaiAlwar and BhoodatAlwar agreed to allow Pei Alwar to join them, although they would have to stand all night long now with 3 people in the room. Then the three of them proceeded all night long to sing the lord’s praises. Pleased by their obedience, they were blessed by the Lord and in his true form appeared before them.
