The origin of the Peddamma Temple is indicated by many legends/stories. According to one legend, Goddess had come to quench her thirst at this place’s well-located place after placing an end to the demon. A shepherd later found at the same location where the temple now stands an idol of the goddess.
According to another legend, a creature named Mahishasur, the son of the snake king Rambha and water buffalo had defiled Indra, the heavens god. He had Lord Brahma’s blessings that neither man nor God could kill him because he had become more and more vindictive. To put an end to his cruelties, Goddess Durga came into being at the request of other gods and blessings of the Holy Trinity-Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva. Together with the forces of Trinity and other gods, Goddess with great power murdered Mahishasura in a fierce fight.
Festivals at Peddamma Temple, Hyderabad
Peddamma Temple is also renowned for numerous festivals that seek blessings from devotees from different areas of the state. This temple celebrates the Bonalu Festival in the month of June-July with excellent fervor and passion. Women are carrying earthen pot covered with neem leaves along with turmeric and kumkum during this festival, containing products like rice, jaggery, milk, and curd. These earthen pots are brought to the Goddess as an offering. Another significant Peddamma Gudi Temple festival is Rathotsavam organized on Ratha Saptami.
