Sreekanteswaram Temple is one of the most Famous Shiva temple in Kerala. Situated in the capital town Thriuvanthapuram,Kerala,India. The temple is more than 700 years old. Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The older Temple with Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu has a similar name called Puthanchantha. so the temple was known as Pazhaya.
Sreekanteswaram Temple has a history behind that,once there was an old sweeper maid in this temple,the women who used to work in used to take rest under the shultter of a tree near her own hut. She would always keep her broom and pot near a tree. The women tried to lift the pot one day as regular but it did not move. So she tried to break the pot using a abstcals she had. Immeditly she found that the pot was bleeding profusely. By this the devoties believed that Lord Shiva gave darshan to the old women.It is distinguished as the Swyambhoo (self manifested) Shiva Linga idol in the Sreekanteswaram Temple .At the temple an annual festival will be conducted and it lasts for ten days and will be celebrated in the Malayalam month Dhanu during the month of december and january.
