Temple overview

Shivaganga is situated 20 km away from the Tumkur town and about 50 km from the state capital Bengaluru. The Shivaganga Hill is known for two Lord Shiva temples that are dedicated to Gangadhareshwara and Swarnambha. One of the Shivaganga temples is situated at the footsteps of the hill, while the other lies 5 km away atop the hill. The festival of Maha Shivaratri is celebrated on a grand scale at these two temples. The temple is famous for the deities in the temple because it is well known for the innate architecture and has been one of the most beautiful creations of man. The temple consists of the two life-size statues of Lord Shiva and Goddess Ganga. Apart from the large statues of Lord Shiva and Ganga, the primary deity is the ‘Linga’, another form of Lord Shiva usually found in Shiva temples. At the base of the hill, you will find Lord Shiva temple, which is the Gangadhareshwara temple. The temple is very famous for its mysterious abhisheka. It is believed that if you perform ghee abhisheka, the ghee will turn into butter. Inside the temple, there is an old cave, which is now locked with an iron gate and they say this cave connects with the other cave, which is at Gavi Gangadhareshwara temple in Bangalore. Besides this temple, you will find Pathala Gange, which is a small underground spring. It is formed between two huge rocks and there are narrow steps to go down to see it. Historically it is said that Pathala Gange is connected with the Antaragange which is in Kolar. But it is hard to imagine this connection today, as both the places are very far from each other.
