Meenakshi Amman Temple which is also known as Minakshi-Sundareshwara Temple, is one of the oldest temples in India. Meenakshi Amman Temple is Located in the city of Madurai, it has a great mythological and historical background. It is believed that Lord Mahadev came in the avatar of Sundareswarar that is the most Handsome man and then married Meenakshi that is goddess Parvathi . Renowned for its impressive architecture, Meenakshi Amman Temple was nominated as one of the wonders of the world, but couldn’t make it into the list of ‘Seven Wonders of the World’. Because of its beautiful architecture the Meenakshi Temple attracts million of devotees everyday. Though thousands of people visits it everyday the Meenakshi Amman Temple is well maintained and is named as Best Swach Iconic place. The ‘Tirukalyanam Festival’ is very famous and it takes place for almost 10 days. The Temple history tells about the how the lord Meenakshi was born and how the shiva Parvathi kalyan took place. There are four main gopurams and totally there are fourteen gopurams in the Meenakshi Temple named as Kadaka Gopuram(main gopuram), Sundareswarar Shrine Gopuram(oldest gopuram), Chitra Gopuram, Nadukkattu Gopuram(also called as Idaikattu Gopuram). The architectural style of Meenakshi temple is Dravadian style of architecture.
The Meenakshi Amman Temple will be open from 5:00am to 12:30pm and again from 4:00pm to 10:00pm.
And Friday it will be open from 9:00am to 7:00pm.
