Konark sun temple

The Sun Temple was built in the 13th century by King Narasimha Deva I of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty (whose great grandfather restored the Jagannath Temple in Puri) towards the end of the temple-building phase of Odisha. Dedicated to Surya the Sun God, it was created as his gigantic celestial chariot with twelve pairs of wheels driven by seven horses (sadly, there remains only one horse).

It is believed that the temple celebrates the Ganga Dynasty’s glory and the king’s triumph over Bengal’s Muslim rulers. This is illustrated by his numerous sculptures portraying war scenes and the actions of the emperor.

Nevertheless, how the temple was constructed remained a mystery until the 1960s when an old manuscript of palm-leaf was found. The comprehensive set of 73 leaves chronicled the preparation of the temple and 12 years of building (from 1246 to 1258). The data is recorded in a book published in 1972 by Alice Boner, S. R. Sarma, and R called New Light on Konarka’s Sun Temple. P. Das.
