History of Kalikambal Temple

The Temple of Kalikambal is a temple dedicated to two kings, not just one. Shri Kaligambal (Kamakshi) and Lord Kamadeswarar’s idols are worshipped here. With a picturesque location at the corner of the Parry in Old: George Town, this temple with its signature Dravidian architecture is, to say the least, breathtaking.

The temple used to have a different location earlier, much closer to the seaside than it is today, according to tradition. It was in the 16th century that it was moved parallel to a famous financial street called Thambu Chetty Street to its current location on the street. In the 17th century, even the great warrior of Maratha, Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, worshipped this shrine.

According to legends, there was a fierce goddess worshipped here, who was later replaced by the Kamakshi Goddess in the form of Shanta Swaroopa or calm posture. Also, visit the city’s popular attractions by following 1 day Chennai road.
