Temple overview

Brihadeeswara Temple which is also called the  ‘Big Temple’ is located at Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu. This temple is a piece of art that is designed by Sama Varma. Initially the diety was not named as Brihadeeswara but was named as ‘Rajarajeshwar’. Later the current name was given by the Marathas as Brihadeeshwara or the Great Ishwara. As a matter of fact this holy shrine had been constructed to add charm to the throne of the Chola dynasty.  The one to add was the Tamil emperor Raja Raja Chola I in fulfillment of a command that was made to him in his dream. There exists a popular legend about this temple which refers back to the Cholas who once received help from a yogi whose name was Karuvayur. The help they received was to build a powerful energy center in the temple. However, the yogi and the Cholas faced some disagreements with respect to the temple. because of which the Cholas abandoned the yogi and soon after that they faced a predicament of the big linga of Shiva not fitting into the peetha. It is then that the Cholas asked for the help of yogi. yogi, Karuvayur spat in his spittoon and asked them to keep it inside the peetha so that the linga fit in to the peetha.  Although it fitted peetha yet it became cursed forever which sent the dynasty to ruins.
